“Due to the deterioration of Sino-US economic and trade relations and the domestic security situation in the United States, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism reminds Chinese tourists to fully assess the risks of travelling to the United States and travel with caution,” the ministry said.

Beijing’s Ministry of Education issued a separate warning, citing a bill making its way through Ohio’s statehouse that contains “negative provisions related to China”.

Passed by the midwestern US state’s House of Representatives last month, the bill “contains negative provisions related to China and imposes restrictions on educational exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and American universities”.

“The Ministry of Education reminds all overseas students to conduct safety risk assessments … when choosing to study in relevant states in the United States in the near future,” the notice added.

The Ohio bill, which mostly targets diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the state’s publicly funded universities also references China in its order to clamp down on “foreign influence”.
