As unemployment continues to rise, an increasing number of jobless individuals in China are turning to street vending as a means of making a living. At the same time, however, authorities in multiple cities have stepped up the removal of these street vendors in the name of “city appearance and order,” which has led to frequent clashes. On June 15 alone, disputes broke out in Chengdu, Haikou, and Ningbo, after urban enforcement officers seized food carts.
