Severe drought has been impacting Shaanxi, Henan, and Gansu provinces in recent days. Reservoir levels have dropped dramatically, farmland is cracked, and crops are wilting under intense heat.
Data from the Shaanxi Provincial Water Resources Department shows that by May 12, drought affected 840,000 acres of farmland. In some areas, river flows have decreased sharply. Sections of the Wei River have seen a 30 percent decline compared to previous years. Once-full reservoirs have dried up, leaving the land fractured and barren.
According to the Weather China website, on May 20, widespread high temperatures continued in northern China. Some locations in Shanxi, Henan, and Ningxia recorded surface temperatures exceeding 70 degrees Celsius. Among them, Yangcheng in Shanxi reached 72.9 degrees Celsius, while Mengzhou, Qixian, Yongji, Wanrong, and Linyi in Henan all broke their local May high temperature records.
Currently, tributaries of the Han River have run dry, and reservoir water storage has fallen by more than 50 percent. Local media have called on residents to conserve water. However, it has been noted that entertainment facilities for wealthy individuals remain unaffected. There are five golf courses operating normally within Shaanxi.
