‘Breasts will be larger’: China parenting app messages leave expectant dads uneasy

A leading parenting platform in China has sparked discomfort among expectant fathers with feeds such as “her body has become the shape of S” and “you can have some sex at this stage,” leading many to voice their complaints on social media.

An internet user, whose wife is 22 weeks pregnant, shared that both he and his wife are registered members of Baby Tree, an app that caters to families with pregnant women and infants.

According to the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, the couple regularly receive messages from the app following their pregnancy update. While the content generally focuses on the physical changes of the expectant mother, some recent messages have made the man uneasy.

On November 25, he received a particular message stating: “Her breasts will possibly be larger. Her body has taken on an ‘S’ shape, reflecting a strong femininity. This will surprise her.”

He criticised this messaging, asking: “Why does it describe a pregnant woman like this? Will a woman at this stage care about the so-called ‘S’ curve?”

On November 27, another message from Baby Tree read: “The fetus develops stably. You can have some sex without any concerns. This can enhance the bond between you two.”

The following day, the feed continued: “She may have lacked interest in sex before, but her attitude might now change.”

The man noted that he and his wife were focused solely on maintaining a healthy diet and regular sleep, rather than on intimacy.
