Continuous heavy rain has hit mainland China in recent days, causing water levels along the Yangtze River to rise. However, the Three Gorges Dam has continued releasing water to protect itself, which has allegedly worsened flooding downstream. A source familiar with the situation claimed that the Three Gorges Dam recently opened 13 spillway gates, creating a dramatic scene. Not only have large areas of residential homes been flooded, but highways and bridges have also been washed away, disrupting local transportation. In Yichang City, where the Three Gorges Dam is located, multiple factories and vehicles were swept away by floodwaters. Some trains were forced to return along their original routes because they could not pass. The flooding in many areas has become severe, while authorities have allegedly kept information about the disaster tightly controlled.
