‘Battlefield training’: ex soldier, 90, travels across China in van with wife, 86

A 90-year-old man from northern China, who has been travelling across the country in his van with his wife for the past two decades, has captured significant attention on social media.

Wang Ruisen, from Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, bought his first van in 2003 to fulfil his dream of a road trip, as reported by Jimu News.

Since then, he has been driving with his 86-year-old wife, Shang, seated beside him, touring across mainland China. He travels at least 20,000 km each year, making 2-3 trips annually, each lasting several months, according to the report.

His remarkable journey with his wife has garnered admiration from internet users, many of whom are younger than he is.

They have ventured to remote areas in Xinjiang in northwestern China and the stunning plateaus of southwestern Tibet.

“Our intention is to appreciate the beautiful landscapes of our country and broaden our horizons. So far, we have visited nearly every famous tourist spot in the nation,” Wang stated.

“He drives well, and I feel assured of my safety when I’m in his car,” Shang added, expressing her happiness in travelling with him.
