Attorneys for former special counsel Jack Smith have responded to a federal watchdog investigation over potential Hatch Act violations, saying the probe is “unfounded.”
Smith brought two criminal cases against former President Donald Trump during the Biden administration.
The Hatch Act limits certain political activities of federal civil service employees.
The Office of Special Counsel confirmed several weeks ago that it was investigating Smith after receiving a referral from Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).
In a letter dated Aug. 25, Smith’s attorneys Lanny Breuer and Peter Koski told the Office of Special Counsel that the investigation is partisan and baseless and that Smith “was fiercely committed to making prosecutorial decisions based solely on the evidence.”…
