She posted photos showing off the earrings on her social media, which sparked a massive public backlash. People were not focused on her showing off wealth but questioned whether her family background and the source of her wealth were reasonable and legal. A popular theory suggested that her father got rich by profiting from disaster relief efforts during his work in Ya’an, through corruption and bribery in post-disaster.
