The Chinese New Year holiday is only halfway through, but as of February 1—the fourth day of the holiday—crowds of workers have already started heading back to cities. Trains and highways are packed, especially with workers from the Pearl River Delta returning early. Some migrant workers said they wanted to avoid the peak travel rush, while others said they left early because of the struggling economy and the need to start earning again as soon as possible.
