The “kids compartment” is incorporated into trains, such as those operating on the 11-hour journey between Xiamen in Fujian province and Beijing, as well as the two-hour route from Nanchang in Jiangxi to Changsha in central Hunan province, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.
Previously a dining area for passengers purchasing food on the train, these carriages have been temporarily renovated to accommodate minors, who can utilise the service free of charge.
In addition to colourful books and toys like magic cubes and Lego bricks, the rail operators organise games and conduct simple science education lectures led by young, friendly staff members, the report indicated.
This modification of the carriage addresses the needs of parents travelling with young children as they head to their hometowns to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which fell on January 29 this year.

“My child enjoys playing happily in this children’s carriage,” a mother, surnamed Huang, was quoted as saying.
