The force revealed on Wednesday that the two women returned to Hong Kong, while the suspect was arrested for alleged conspiracy to defraud. A press conference is expected to be held at 4pm.
Police made the announcement after a Hong Kong task force was sent to Thailand in response to growing concerns about city residents being forced into working at scam farms in the region.
Speaking to reporters after returning to the city on Tuesday evening, Undersecretary for Security Michael Cheuk Hau-yip, who led the task force, said Thai authorities were expected to roll out measures to ensure visitors’ safety as part of efforts to combat human trafficking in Southeast Asia.
He added that he hoped to secure the release of 12 residents lured into working at scam farms in the region by Lunar New Year.
