Ex-Hong Kong opposition lawmaker Shiu Ka-chun dies at 55 after cancer battle

Former Hong Kong opposition lawmaker Shiu Ka-chun has died at the age of 55 after a battle with stomach cancer.

Politicians such as Democratic Party chairman Lo Kin-hei confirmed the news on social media, with Fermi Wong Wai-fun, former head of NGO Hong Kong Unison, saying Shiu was certified dead at 12.41am on Friday.

In November, Shiu said he underwent emergency surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital to remove half of his stomach due to cancer, adding he had lost 15kg (33lbs) of weight as a result. He shared pictures of himself on a hospital bed praying before eating.

Shiu received palliative care earlier this week.

The former legislator from the social welfare sector was one of the nine key figures of Hong Kong’s Occupy movement in 2014 and was jailed for eight months in 2019 for his role in the 79-day protest that called for universal suffrage.
