Yet, before China’s self-congratulatory drums even finished beating, news from the G20 summit two days later revealed that the UK, Italy, and Japan had met with Saudi Arabia to discuss bringing it into a Western sixth-generation fighter jet project, with a deal likely sealed by year’s end. This development dealt a significant blow to China’s narrative. Beijing not only failed to secure a major Saudi contract but also faced setbacks in the international arms market.
