The conflict between fishermen in Chengwu Village in Zhanjiang, and the Chinese authorities has continued to escalate, expanding from land to sea. Following a violent confrontation with police in the early hours of December 3, villagers engaged in intense clashes at sea over two consecutive days from December 5 to 6. The villagers used fishing boats to intercept government enforcement vessels and prevent the destruction of their offshore fish cages, resulting in what resembled a small-scale naval battle.
Video footage shows villagers steering multiple fishing boats to form a blockade at sea, intercepting maritime law enforcement ships attempting to enter Chengwu’s waters and demolish the fish cages. The villagers even used high-pressure water cannons to spray official vessels, escalating the tension on-site.
