Storm Man-yi: Hong Kong Observatory to consider issuing T1 signal as early as Monday

Hong Kong Observatory has said it will consider issuing a No 1 warning as early as Monday as Super Typhoon Man-yi edges closer, while warning that the weather is expected to remain windy and temperatures to fall to 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 Fahrenheit) or below later this week.

The forecaster’s storm tracker showed Man-yi was likely to travel at around 120km/h (74mph) and weaken as its centre reached within 800km (497 miles) of the city by Monday morning.

The storm was also expected to go from a typhoon to a severe tropical storm and move at a speed of 90km/h by Tuesday, when it was centred 400km from the city, the Observatory said.

“We expect Man-yi to enter 800km within of Hong Kong tonight or early tomorrow, edging towards the South China coast,” Observatory scientific officer Lam Ka-fai said on Sunday.

“Under the combined effects of the northeastern monsoon and Man-yi, the winds will become stronger from Monday to Tuesday. The Observatory will issue a tropical cyclone warning signal then.”

The warning, also known as a No 1 signal, is issued when a tropical cyclone is centred 800km away from Hong Kong and likely to affect the city.

The forecaster also said Man-yi would become a tropical depression on Wednesday as it moved away from Hong Kong.
