Shanghai’s New Marginalized: $4 Jail Rooms, Homeless and Living Under Bridges

Chedun is a spot for many workers from out of town who come to Shanghai. This area is unique in that it draws a variety of these “freelancers” who move around, sometimes found in parks, under bridges, or along the streets. The space beneath bridges has become a regular gathering point, offering zones for cooking, laundry, relaxing, and resting. For those without stable housing, this space, though far from ideal, becomes a necessary option. After all, if they had the money, who would choose to live under a bridge?
