Shanghai Filled With Abandoned Projects; $4B Pentagonal Trade City, $30B Luxury Area Now Ghost Towns

Shanghai’s largest abandoned building project has been deserted for over a decade. Let’s take a look inside. This is Shanghai’s most astonishing unfinished building project of the century. Construction began in 2003 and finished in 2009, with the building resembling the U.S. Pentagon, even down to its five floors. Before we go inside, let’s go over its story. The Pentagonal Mart was developed by a consortium of companies from Shanghai and Wenzhou, originally intended as a central exhibition platform for imported goods that would serve the Yangtze River Delta and beyond. The location was chosen because officials believed Huinan in Pudong would become Shanghai’s next major economic hub. However, things didn’t go as planned. After it was completed in 2009, the remote location led to low foot traffic, and leasing partnerships fell through. For over a decade, no businesses have moved in, and over time, this massive mall was left to decay.
