Chongqing residents were once promised relief from their sweltering summers by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, touted by Chinese state media as the world’s largest natural “air conditioner.” In 2003, before the reservoir began filling, officials claimed it would cool the city by up to 5 degrees in summer and warm it by 4 degrees in winter. But instead of the expected climate comfort, Chongqing’s residents continue to endure blistering heat, with this summer’s unrelenting temperatures leaving many wondering whether the reservoir’s cooling powers were overstated.
