The Hong Kong Observatory has issued the No 8 signal, the city’s first of the year, with the warning to last until at least Friday noon as Super Typhoon Yagi is edging closer to Hong Kong.
The forecaster issued the warning at 6.20pm.
Described as an “extremely strong” typhoon, Yagi’s maximum sustained winds near the centre have reached 210km/h (130mph), according to the forecaster. The wind intensity is expected to remain as it is or even increase.
The city is grinding to a halt gradually, with school classes and public transport services suspended. Carriers have also cancelled flights, and the fate of a K-pop concert on Friday remains uncertain.
