The vehicle was lifted from the waters beneath the Shenzhen Bay Bridge shortly after midday on Tuesday by a barge-mounted crane before it was loaded onto the vessel, which was then towed away by a tugboat.

A video posted online shows two of the vehicle’s four wheels are missing, while the car body has suffered extensive damage and had its four doors twisted.

The wreckage was being brought to a marine police base in Tuen Mun and then sent to the force’s vehicle impound in Tai Lam Chung, where authorities would examine the car, according to police.

Chief Inspector Chui Wing-luen of police’s New Territories North traffic unit told a press briefing that officers were pursuing multiple lines of inquiry, such as assessing the driver’s mental state, as well as gauging the vehicle’s speed during the incident and whether it had any mechanical faults.
