China’s Western Pacific Ambitions Shattered: Australia’s First Test of the Standard Missile-6

In early August, Australia’s Hobart-class destroyer successfully launched an SM-6 during the “Pacific Dragon 2024” exercise, demonstrating its ability to intercept hypersonic missiles and other high-speed aerial targets. These Australian destroyers, equipped with the U.S. Aegis combat system can seamlessly cooperate with U.S. forces, particularly excelling in joint operations with U.S. carrier strike groups. In any potential future conflict, the Australian Navy, armed with advanced weapons such as the SM-2 and SM-6, could provide strong support to the U.S. military, thereby weakening China’s strategic advantage in the Western Pacific to an extent.
