Hong Kong police charge off-duty officer over alleged rape of woman, 21

Hong Kong police have arrested and charged an off-duty officer in connection with the alleged rape of a 21-year-old woman.

The force said officers launched an investigation after the woman made a report to police at about 3pm on Wednesday saying she had been raped in a residential flat.

“After conducting an initial investigation, police arrested a 24-year-old man in Tai Po on the same day on suspicion of rape,” police said on Thursday.

The suspect is an off-duty police officer, according to the force.

The man was charged with one count of rape and will be brought before Fanling Court on Friday morning.

Detectives from the New Territories North regional crime unit are following up on the case.

“The force places great importance on the conduct of officers, and any violation of the law by its personnel will not be tolerated or condoned. It will be dealt with strictly and seriously,” police said.
