Experts note that China possesses several hundred nuclear warheads. However, a credible threat to the U.S. mainland depends not only on warhead numbers, but also on reliable delivery systems, especially intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). Because China’s sea-based nuclear forces remain relatively weak and closely monitored by U.S. and Japanese navies, its land-based arsenal is viewed as the most direct threat to the United States.
