Experts note that China possesses several hundred nuclear warheads. However, a credible threat to the U.S. mainland depends not only on warhead numbers, but also on reliable delivery systems, especially intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). Because China’s sea-based nuclear forces remain relatively weak and closely monitored by U.S. and Japanese navies, its land-based arsenal is viewed as the most direct threat to the United States. As tensions rise in the Persian Gulf, China’s ICBM capabilities have drawn intense attention in both Washington and Beijing.
