Xi Jinping is purging China’s top generals again. Does that make the world safer—or more dangerous?
China’s leader has just removed some of the highest-ranking officials in the People’s Liberation Army, including Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission Zhang Youxia. It’s one of the most dramatic military purges under Xi Jinping yet—and it comes just as China approaches 2027, the year Xi has reportedly set for the PLA to be ready to invade Taiwan.
Some analysts argue these purges weaken China’s military, disrupt command structures, and lower the chances of war. Others warn the opposite: that removing experienced generals leaves Xi surrounded by loyal “yes men,” increasing the risk of reckless decisions and catastrophic miscalculation.
