Late in the night of JANUARY 27, reports emerged from BEIJING of sustained gunfire. Unverified claims suggested that an anti–Xi alliance formed by forces loyal to recently detained Central Military Commission Vice Chairman Zhang Youxia clashed with elements of the presidential guard believed to be supporting Xi Jinping. Multiple casualties were reportedly sustained on both sides during the exchange.
