Hong Kong fire: authorities seek to dissolve Wang Fuk Court owners’ committee

Hong Kong authorities are seeking to dissolve the management committee of the Wang Fuk Court owners’ corporation and appoint a new property management company for the residential estate, in an unprecedented move following the city’s deadliest fire in decades.

Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak Mei-kuen said on Friday that the government was intervening for the first time on record in a residential estate’s affairs by applying to the Lands Tribunal to dissolve the management committee of the owner’s corporation and appoint developer Chinachem Group’s Hop On Management to oversee the property.

She stressed that owners’ interests in the real estate and their power in the owners’ corporation would remain unchanged.

Hop On would be able to advise them on property management matters on a pro bono basis, the minister said.

“Management of Wang Fuk Court is facing an unprecedented challenge, especially follow-up work after major renovation works, relevant project contracts, handling of maintenance accounts, insurance compensation and management of the estate after contract expiry of the current management company, and security,” Mak said.

“Many residents may not be able to handle such complicated matters.”

She added that the government had also received feedback from residents who hoped authorities could take over the management of the corporation.
