Baidu and Lenovo Massive Layoffs! China’s Big Tech Done, 1.5M Companies Closed in the First Half

It seems Baidu really is running out of money. The logo on its headquarters building is peeling so badly, yet they haven’t even bothered to fix it. Recently, Baidu underwent the largest round of layoffs since 2018, with up to 30% of employees affected. This includes both new hires and longtime employees, many of whom are being forced out just after joining. The reason behind this massive layoff is clear: they’re out of money. In the third quarter, the company posted a net loss of 11.2 billion yuan. Baidu’s core search business has been hit hard by AI, and it’s just not performing as well as it used to. I don’t know how long it’s been since you’ve used Baidu, but for me, whenever I have a question, I turn to AI first. Platforms like Xiaohongshu and short video platforms have also somewhat replaced search functions.
