Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi has accused her former agent of exerting undue pressure on her and defrauding her out of 8 million yuan (US$1.13 million) by making false representations.
Cheung, 45, took the witness box at the High Court on Friday to counter allegations that she reneged on a promise to Asia Entertainment Group (AEG) president Samuel Yu Yuk-hing to appear in four films produced by the now liquidated company between 2011 and 2019.
“Throughout my life, I, Cecilia Cheung, have hated having to explain everything to others. I don’t care how anybody tries to vilify me. I just gulp it down,” Cheung said while appearing to fight back her tears.

Yu, who claimed to be Cheung’s god-grandfather, alleged that the actress breached her contractual duties after their relationship turned sour in 2014.
The litigant earlier told the court that the artist had been ungrateful and had refused to return the favour after he offered her a HK$40 million (US$5.1 million) deal in July 2011 to help her overcome financial difficulties.

He insisted that Cheung had entered into a personal contract with him rather than with AEG, meaning she remained bound by the agreement despite the company’s liquidation in August 2013.
