Hong Kong museum visitors enjoy calmer day after crowd chaos at Egypt exhibition

Hong Kong’s Palace Museum suspended on-site ticket sales for its popular ancient Egyptian exhibition on Sunday, after the gallery descended into chaos during its opening weekend, with visitors waiting for hours and many demanding refunds.

The museum also announced on Sunday that it would extend the gallery’s opening hours by two hours, closing at 8pm.

Due to an “overwhelming number of visitors”, the museum said it would temporarily halt on-site ticket sales for the “Ancient Egypt Unveiled: Treasures from Egyptian Museums” exhibition from 11am.

“The museum will monitor the situation and may resume on-site ticket sales in the evening,” it said in a statement.

It advised visitors to attend the exhibition in the morning or early evening to avoid peak afternoon crowds.

“Visitors who have not yet bought tickets but wish to attend the exhibition are advised to consider visiting on another date and to purchase tickets online in advance for better trip planning,” the museum said.
