Charlie Kirk shooting: FBI finds rifle in woods, killer still at large

The FBI on Thursday released two photographs of a person of interest wanted in connection with the shooting of US President Donald Trump’s youth leader ally Charlie Kirk, offering a US$100,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person or people responsible for the attack

Investigators said they have also recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle they believe was used in the killing and are reviewing video footage of the person they believe was responsible.

The sniper who assassinated the right-wing activist fired a single fatal shot before jumping off a roof and fleeing, authorities said. The photos show a person wearing a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved black shirt.

Kirk, a 31-year-old podcast-radio commentator and the co-founder of the conservative student group Turning Point USA, is credited with helping build the Republican Party’s support among younger voters.

He was killed on Wednesday in what Utah Governor Spencer Cox called a political assassination.

The killing, captured in graphic detail in videos that rapidly spread around the internet, occurred as Kirk spoke onstage at an outdoor event called “Prove Me Wrong” in front of about 3,000 people at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, about 40 miles (65km) south of Salt Lake City.
