Hong Kong’s weather forecaster will assess the need to issue the No 3 typhoon warning signal on Sunday, expecting a tropical depression to intensify and enter within 200km (125 miles) of the city next week.
The Hong Kong Observatory raised the No 1 signal at 10.20pm on Friday and said it would remain in force most of Saturday as the tropical depression’s circulation was relatively small. It added that it was expected to stay about 500km or more away from the city during the day.
“Depending on the intensity of the tropical cyclone, the distance of its strong winds from Hong Kong and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the No 3 typhoon signal [on Sunday],” it said.
According to the forecaster, the tropical depression will intensify into a typhoon and come within 200km of Hong Kong as it edges towards the western coast of Guangdong on early Monday morning.
