Recently, China’s aviation industry faced a major shakeup. The country’s top airlines are planning to order nearly 1,000 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. The news inadvertently revealed the serious issues China is facing in manufacturing large civilian aircraft and instantly turned the much-hyped C919 into a joke.
For many years, China’s state-owned aircraft manufacturer, COMAC, backed by the CCP regime, has invested over billions of dollars in an attempt to weaken the market position of foreign plane manufacturers and reduce China’s reliance on Boeing and Airbus. But what about COMAC’s production capacity? According to data from aviation consulting firm Cirium, COMAC planned to deliver about 75 aircraft this year, but as of mid-August, the company had only delivered 5 C919s to Chinese customers, far below the expectations of Chinese airlines.
