In a reply to the Post after the event, Ip said: “I want to thank my young fans sincerely for their heart-melting support! I find them to be extremely creative. I hope they had a fun day celebrating my birthday together!”
The celebration, organised by a Facebook group of supporters, drew a sizeable and enthusiastic crowd outside Causeway Bay’s Sogo department store.
The group had announced the event on social media days ago, inviting the public to join in a birthday support rally for Ip, convenor of the key decision-making Executive Council and chairwoman of the New People’s Party.

Activities began at 4.30pm, with participants displaying banners and distributing about 500 glasses cloths with her face printed on them. The group told the media the cloth souvenirs cost around HK$700 to produce and took a week to prepare.
