“It is expected to enter within 800km [497 miles] of Hong Kong [on Friday night]. The Observatory will issue the No 1 typhoon warning signal by then,” the forecaster said.

“The tropical cyclone will move across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea and intensify gradually over the weekend, maintaining a distance of about 500km or more from the city.”

The weather is set to be mainly fine and very hot on Saturday morning, with a few showers and squally thunderstorms. There may also be swells.

Sunday will be windy with occasional squally showers. The Observatory reminded the public to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in any water sports.
