At Port of Manzanillo on Mexico’s Pacific coast—the country’s largest port and gateway for 40 percent of its foreign trade—an unprecedented wave of abandoned cargo has erupted. In June alone, nearly 900 containers filled with Chinese goods were left behind by their owners, a year-on-year surge of more than 300 percent. Customs inspections delivered a devastating verdict: most of the shipments were classified as counterfeit or pirated goods.
