No 1 typhoon signal in Hong Kong to remain in force until 8pm on Sunday

The No 1 typhoon signal will remain in force in Hong Kong at least until 8pm on Sunday, while some classes were suspended in neighbouring Macau due to a tropical cyclone.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the tropical depression would remain at least 600km (373 miles) from the city on Sunday morning.

“Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground,” it said.

“The need for issuing the No 3 strong wind signal thereafter depends on the distance between associated strong winds and the Pearl River Delta, and the change in local winds.”

Rainbands associated with the tropical depression affected the coastal areas of Guangdong province on Sunday. There will be occasional squally showers with thunderstorms in Hong Kong.

Macau’s Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued a No 3 typhoon signal at noon on Sunday, which it said would remain in effect throughout the day.
