Hong Kong’s population has stabilised and remained “virtually unchanged” for the first time in a decade, following waves of significant emigration and an influx of non-local talent in recent years.

The Census and Statistics Department said on Thursday that Hong Kong’s midyear population stood at 7,527,500, up slightly by 3,400 from 12 months ago, accounting for an increase of less than 0.005 per cent.

The government attributed the stasis to ongoing measures in talent attraction and labour importation.

“Over the past few years, many people have moved to Hong Kong from the mainland and other places around the world,” it said.

The inflow has offset the impact of the natural population decrease to stabilise the overall number in mid-2025.

The latest population figure has increased by more than 0.18 million compared with mid-2022, it added.
