Some spent thousands of Hong Kong dollars on plates bearing obscure numbers and letters, as about 100 people sought out rare finds at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai in the afternoon.

One motorist with a wry sense of humour picked up “2 P00R” for a modest HK$24,000, beating out two other bidders. “WEALTHY”, ironically, sold for just HK$22,000.

Bids for “I L1KE U” started at HK$5,000 and shot up rapidly as several hopefuls exchanged fire in HK$1,000 increments, before offers began to rise by HK$2,000 and then HK$5,000 at a time.

The plate, which sold for HK$130,000, was one of the 120 auctioned by the Transport Department in the afternoon.

“L0VE UUU” also managed to fetch HK$52,000, “X LK X” reached HK$48,000 and “L0VEEE” went for HK$30,000.
