The South China Morning Post collected 12 prizes at a ceremony for the annual Hong Kong News Awards on Friday, as the city’s leader urged journalists to uphold professionalism amid increased protectionism and hegemony globally.

The Post was one of the biggest winners among its peers at the ceremony hosted by the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, securing accolades across 11 categories for reporting, writing, photography and design.
The City desk won the two top awards in the Best Scoop category. Edith Lin and Jeffie Lam secured first place with their investigation into unauthorised structures added to luxury properties.
The pair, along with Kahon Chan, Natalie Wong and Lilian Cheng, also finished second for a series on the controversy surrounding a Dubai prince who had pledged to launch a US$500 million family office in Hong Kong.
The desk also picked up a merit award for Best News Reporting for its coverage of the passing of the city’s domestic national security law in March last year.
Reporter Sammy Heung’s series of five stories on the movers and shakers in the city’s scientific field earned her third place in the category of Best Science News Reporting.
