The president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has said escalating tensions between China and the United States in recent years have helped his institution attract talent from overseas.

Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, said he did not want geopolitical issues to negatively affect the normal teaching and learning in the tertiary institution or the exchange of academic research.
He added that while he did not have specific figures on how geopolitics directly affected overseas student enrolment, it had influenced some professors to consider moving to universities in Hong Kong.
“It would probably be an opportunity to hire some good talent,” he said.
He explained that it was understandable for academics to consider their career options in light of the current climate.

“Some may originally plan to keep on working overseas, but due to the world now becoming turbulent, they may think it would be more productive to work in Asia and some may pick CUHK,” he said.
