A Hong Kong court has convicted social worker Jackie Chen Hung-sau in a retrial of the defendant for her involvement in an anti-government protest in 2019.

Deputy District Judge May Chung handed down the guilty verdict on Tuesday at District Court in Wan Chai.
Earlier in December last year, Chen pleaded not guilty to rioting during a protest in 2019 in a retrial that came after the government appealed against her acquittal four years ago.
She was acquitted midway through her trial in September 2020 after a judge found she had no case to answer.
District Judge Sham Siu-man at the time concluded that prosecutors failed to prove a prima facie case against Chen, who had pleaded not guilty to a riot charge that stemmed from violent clashes in Wan Chai on August 31, 2019.

But the Court of Appeal later ordered a retrial of four defendants for their involvement in the protests after finding the trial judge adopted an unrealistic and speculative approach in handling their cases.
