A court in eastern China has rejected a couple’s bid to get compensation from a tourist site where their daughter plunged to her death because she did not buy an entry ticket.

The dead woman, surnamed Gao, who was a year-three student at a university, travelled alone to Lushan Mountain in the southeastern province of Jiangxi in July 2021.
Ten days after she disappeared, her already seriously decomposed body was found by police at the foot of a 50-metre cliff in the tourism zone, the state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Her parents initially reached an agreement with the scenic zone which offered to compensate them 40,000 yuan (US$5,500).
However, months later, the couple took the tourism company to court and asked for 950,000 yuan (US$130,000), accusing the company of not fulfilling its obligation to guarantee the safety of tourists.

A court in Jiangxi made a final ruling in February, dismissing the couple’s request and saying the tourism company was not responsible for the woman’s death.
