A by-election to select members of the committee responsible for appointing the city’s leader proceeded as scheduled on Sunday despite the issuance of the No 3 typhoon signal.

As of 1pm, the cumulative voter turnout was 86.97 per cent, with 3,158 of the 3,631 registered voters casting their ballots.
Electoral Affairs Committee Chairman Justice David Lok Kai-hong said earlier on Sunday that his team was prepared for the adverse weather.
“We have made extensive preparations, so even if there are any unexpected situations today, the Electoral Affairs Commission and the Registration and Electoral Office will be fully prepared to handle different scenarios,” Lok said.
“We maintain close contact with the Observatory, and we will make appropriate arrangements when necessary.”

Six Election Committee subsectors held a by-election on Sunday, with 28 candidates contesting 21 available seats.
