An elderly taxi driver has been arrested after his vehicle allegedly knocked down and killed a cyclist near a petrol station in the northwestern part of Hong Kong.

Police said the taxi was heading in the direction of Yuen Long along Castle Peak Road in Lam Tei at 6.25am on Saturday. The vehicle was approaching a pedestrian crossing when it allegedly struck the 68-year-old cyclist.
The 73-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.
The cyclist sustained a serious head injury and was unconscious when taken to Tuen Mun Hospital, where he was certified dead at 7.31am.
Police said the taxi driver was being detained for questioning.

The northern New Territories special investigation team for traffic is looking into the case.
