6 Hong Kong officials slapped with fresh US sanctions: who are they and what’s next?

The United States has imposed another major round of sanctions on six officials in Hong Kong, including the justice secretary and outgoing police chief, over what Washington said was “transnational repression” under national security legislation.

The move on Tuesday followed previously imposed economic penalties and other restrictions against the city after Beijing enacted a national security law in 2020 in response to the months-long social unrest the year before.

Beijing has vowed to retaliate while the Hong Kong government has also slammed the US action, saying it will not be cowed.
