Hundreds of residents sweltering in a public housing block in northern Hong Kong hit by a power outage may have to endure up to three more days without electricity.

By Sunday, power had been restored to some floors of Tin Ming House at Tin Ping Estate in Sheung Shui, including a care home for the elderly, after a short circuit in the electricity meter room the previous afternoon knocked out the supply.

However, more than 470 households on 10 floors in the block will have to endure the hot weather while the building’s management coordinates with the contractor to conduct emergency repairs.

The power cut left residents without hot water for showers or air conditioning, driving some to spend the night away from home.

An employee in Tin Ping Estate’s management office said on Sunday that repair work was expected to last until Wednesday as workmen were not available over the weekend.

A cable and other components would have to be replaced so the work would take around three days, the employee added.
