About 300 passengers and crew members on board a high-speed ferry from Hong Kong to Macau escaped injury when the vessel hit a pier on Saturday after having to return to the dock because of “mechanical failure”.

The TurboJet ferry hit the pier at the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan shortly after 3.30pm.

Images circulating online showed that the bow of the Universal MK 2005 catamaran was slightly damaged and had been covered with a large cloth.

“A passenger on board called police and said the ferry hit the pier when it was just about to set sail to Macau,” a police spokesman said.

“Initial information [we received] is that there were 289 passengers on board, and there was no report of injury.”
