25 operations delayed, another transferred to different room after Hong Kong hospital power cut

A Hong Kong hospital postponed 25 surgical operations originally scheduled for Thursday after a 50-minute power disruption forced it to transfer a procedure to a different operating room the previous day.

Kwong Wah Hospital in Mong Kok said on Wednesday night its power supply system was interrupted at about 7pm, affecting the electricity delivery to some of its operating theatres.

“The hospital immediately arranged emergency repairs and the electricity supply to the operating theatres resumed at about 7.50pm,” a spokesman for the Hospital Authority said.

“During the electricity supply interruption, one surgery needed to be transferred to another unaffected operating theatre.”

He said another 25 non-emergency operations that were set to take place on Thursday morning would also be postponed, with the hospital arranging a comprehensive check on its power supply system, which would require the suspension of services in some operating rooms.

“All other clinical services in hospital, including emergency operations, inpatient services and [the] accident and emergency service remained unaffected,” he added.

But the authority did not detail the nature of the power supply failure and its cause in the late statement.

Kwong Wah Hospital apologised to the affected patients and said it had reported the incident to the authority’s head office.
