Twenty-three students at a Hong Kong secondary school have suffered acute gastroenteritis after returning from an exchange tour in Guangdong, health authorities have said.

Those infected were among the school’s about 120 teachers and students who travelled to the mainland Chinese city of Shaoguan for the exchange tour on Thursday and Friday, the Centre for Health Protection said on Monday night.
The Department of Health told the Post on Tuesday that the institution involved was Sha Tin Government Secondary School.
The centre said symptoms of acute gastroenteritis first appeared in two students on Friday, with one of them vomiting after disembarking the bus at the end of the trip.
Twenty-one more students subsequently developed symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fever, between Saturday and Monday.

The centre said nine of them sought medical attention and none required hospitalisation.
