1.2 Trillion Yarlung Tsangpo Hydropower Project Begins, 3 Times the Three Gorges, a Human Disaster

A groundbreaking and highly controversial hydropower project in China has officially begun. On July 19, the country launched the Yarlung Tsangpo River downstream hydropower project, which is three times the size of the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower project. The total investment for the project is 1.2 trillion RMB, or about $170 billion—six times the cost of the Three Gorges.
